Board vs. Blanket Insulation—Which one to use?

Insulation is a critical yet often overlooked component in both residential and commercial buildings, playing a key role in creating comfortable, energy-efficient, and durable spaces. Particularly in regions like the Philippines, where temperatures can soar in the summer and the rainy season presents challenges, insulation is vital in regulating indoor climate, reducing energy consumption, and protecting properties from moisture-related issues.

Two common types of insulation are board and blanket, both typically available as Rockwool or Fiberglass. Each type offers unique benefits depending on the application, making it important to understand their differences for optimal use.

Blanket Insulation

Blanket insulation, available in batts or rolls, covers large surface areas and is ideal for uneven or curved surfaces. It’s a flexible solution for roofing, ceilings, and crawl spaces, where its ability to fit around obstacles ensures thorough coverage.

Board Insulation

Board insulation, on the other hand, offers more structural integrity, making it ideal for vertical wall partitions and floors where durability is key. Its rigid structure allows it to hold up under its own weight and is easier to install due to its size.

Other Important Factors to Remember

Both blanket and board insulation are known for its fire and moisture resistance and soundproofing capabilities. The key factor influencing its performance are density, thickness, and what finishes the insulation has.

Density

In the case of insulation materials, density determines how well it can block sound, as well as how much it can retain it's shape. Higher-density insulation materials provide better sound absorption as well as durability, while lower-density options may suffice for spaces that require less sound dampening or where you're not too concerned with maintaining a uniform thickness.

Thickness

Thickness on the other hand helps determine the insulation material's R-Value which is a material's ability to stop heat transfer from one side to another. Thicker insulation will have a higher R-value and will be able to block the heat from passing through surfaces such as roofing or exterior walls.

Finishes

Finally, insulation materials can be used with a bare finish, or they can be finished with either foil or black tissue. Bare finished insulation is mostly used for filling in cavities such as drywall or duct cladding. Foil facing reflects radiant heat away from a surface, which greatly increases an insulating material's ability to block hear, and is commonly used in insulating roofing which receives a lot of radiant heat from the sun. Black tissue facing is a porous fiberglass material that increases an insulating materials' sound absorption, as well as reduce shedding of fibers.

At KITCI, we can provide insulation materials with bare finish, as well as foil or black tissue facing, depending on your insulation needs
